The Federal Government has confirmed the arrest of several individuals on the Interpol Red Notice list at Nigerian airports as part of enhanced border control measures, achieved through recent inter-ministerial collaboration.
Speaking during a joint press briefing in Abuja, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, praised the success of the partnership between their ministries, particularly in securing Nigeria’s borders using technology.
Tunji-Ojo said that recent arrests were made through the newly implemented Advanced Passenger Information (API) system, while the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, described the initiative as a “seamless collaboration” aimed at balancing national security with ease of travel.
The Interior Minister also announced that starting May 1, 2025, Nigeria will introduce an e-visa system, along with automated landing and exit cards. These will replace the current paper-based immigration documentation and be integrated into global criminal databases, including Interpol.
The Interior Minister further explained that Nigerians are exempted from filling these cards by law and reiterated that the forms will be free of charge. He added that to ensure a smooth rollout, a three-month amnesty window will begin from May 1, 2025, during this period, foreigners in breach of immigration laws will have the opportunity to regularize their stay without penalty.
