In futherance to the seven days of National mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government has declared today, Tuesday, as a Public Holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
The Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Tinubu,.
The Minister stated that the holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy in governance and national development.
The Presidency on Monday also postponed a special Federal Executive Council session earlier slated for today in honour of the former President to a yet-to-be-disclosed date.
In a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it said the meeting “will no longer be held as announced earlier, given the state funeral in his hometown, Daura, on the same day.”
The late former President Muhammadu Buhari will be laid to rest today, Tuesday, July 15, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, with burial rites scheduled for 2:00 p.m., following the expected arrival of his remains at 12 noon.
This was confirmed by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda during a press briefing in Katsina, where he formally announced the funeral arrangements after consultations with the deceased’s family and close associates in London.
This comes as President Tinubu has approved the constitution of an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate a befitting state burial for the former President.
Announcing the decision in Abuja on Monday, the Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, said the committee would work in collaboration with the Katsina State Government and the family of the late president to ensure a dignified programme of events.
