The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the war against illicit drugs with the commissioning of 48 operational vehicles for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in order to enhance the agency’s mobility and operational capacity nationwide.
Commissioning the vehicles at the NDLEA headquarters today in Abuja, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, commended NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd) for his “discipline, commitment, and transformative leadership,” describing the agency as “a result-oriented force addressing grave threats to national security, social stability, and public health.”
Ribadu reaffirmed the Office of the National Security Adviser’s commitment to coordinating NDLEA operations with other security and regulatory agencies.
In his remarks, NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), described the procurement as “symbolic and historic,” noting that it was the first time in the agency’s 35-year history that commanders would receive staff cars. He credited President Tinubu’s support for enabling record seizures of over one billion pills of tramadol, 14.4 million bottles of codeine, and the arrest of more than 40,000 drug offenders since January 2024.
Also speaking, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), suggested exploring sentencing measures that would compel convicted drug offenders to serve punishments within their local communities as a deterrent.
From the military high command, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, pledged the Armed Forces’ collaboration, warning that drug-related crimes fuel terrorism and banditry.
