The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦987 billion for overhaul of Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, with the complete reconstruction of Terminal One at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) as the centerpiece.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who announced this after Thursday’s Federal Executive Cuncil FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu, stated that the terminal will be rebuilt with new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
According to Keyamo, Terminal Two will also be expanded to include aprons, access roads, bridges, and auxiliary infrastructure, with the entire Lagos airport upgrade valued at ₦712.26 billion and awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for completion within 22 months.
The FEC also approved a ₦49.9 billion security enhancement project for MMIA, which includes a 14.6-kilometer perimeter fence, CCTV cameras, solar-powered floodlights, and a modern command center to eliminate manual patrols.
Runway upgrades were also approved for several airports across the country.
In a separate development, the FEC also approved the full business case for the 30-year concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, including its unfinished cargo terminal.
Keyamo explained that while major airports like Lagos, Abuja, and Kano generate profits, these are often used to subsidise smaller airports, noting that the involvement of private investors will enable government to transform these facilities into commercially viable hubs.
Meanwhile, Minister of Works Dave Umahi revealed that over ₦2 trillion worth of road and bridge projects are under construction across Nigeria.
Following the same FEC meeting, Umahi gave updates on progress of key projects such as the Abuja road network, where ₦75 billion has been disbursed for the first 118-kilometer section, and ₦150 billion for the second 164-kilometer stretch.
Umahi noted that the Abuja-Kano highway, budgeted at ₦450 billion, has received ₦45 billion in payments, while the $22 billion Abuja County application project has also gotten a 30% release.
Revealing that the completion of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, which has elevated Lagos State’s GDP, is at 85% completion, Umahi noted the ₦11.423 billion boost for the Lagos-Shagamu-Ijebu Ode-Ore road, and an approval of a second section of the Sokoto-Badagry corridor awarded to Kebbi State.
Speaking on the unfortunate incident of Flyover collapse that occurred on the 14th July, 2025, at Keffi, Umahi affirmed that the government has settled affected families and reconstruction work has resumed on the site.
