ECOWAS President Urges Bloc To Address Integration Challenges

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is currently facing integration challenges and aims to strengthen unity, solidarity, and fraternity within the bloc to address these difficulties.

During the 37th ordinary meeting of the ECOWAS Administration and Finance Committee (AFC) in Abuja, Dr. Omar Touray, President of the commission, highlighted the financial difficulties facing the community and the need to assess the mid-term implementation of its programs and activities.

Represented by ECOWAS Vice President, Mrs. Damtien Tchintchibidja, Touray noted that the committee would explore strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger’s withdrawal while preserving ECOWAS’ 50 years of integration achievements.

Touray emphasized that lessons learned from ECOWAS’ recent fiftieth anniversary and the departure of the three member states underscore the urgency of institutional, organizational, political, and security reforms. He explained that, in line with decisions made by the Heads of State and Government, the commission would soon convene a summit to discuss the future of ECOWAS. Additionally, the AFC session would provide updates on the status of recruitment within the commission’s institutions, ensuring transparency and progress in administration.

Prof. Nazifi Darma, ECOWAS Commissioner for Internal Services, also addressed the evolving challenges in global aid and financing, which have prompted the commission to procure new communications infrastructure. He urged member states to reconsider their approaches to resource generation and utilization, emphasizing that the newly acquired equipment would enhance the commission’s communication operations. This move aligns with ECOWAS’ broader efforts to modernize and adapt to changing financial and technological landscapes.
