A large scientific review has found no clear evidence that taking paracetamol during pregnancy causes autism or ADHD in children, countering repeated claims made by Donald Trump.
The World Health Organization also maintains that paracetamol remains a safe option for pregnant women to treat pain. The new BMJ-published review examined all existing studies and concluded that earlier research suggesting a connection was of low quality and failed to account for key factors like family history.
Experts say the findings confirm long-held views that paracetamol does not cause neurodivergence but highlight the need for more investment in women’s health research.
