Somaliland has held its presidential election, at a time when the breakaway Somali region sees international recognition within reach after three decades of defacto self-rule. President Muse Abdi, in power since 2017, is standing for re-election against the main opposition party’s candidate, Abdirahman Cirro. Somaliland, which occupies a strategic position near the entryway to the Red Sea, declared independence from the Mogadishu government in 1991, but has not been recognised by any other country, restricting access to international finance and the ability of its 6 million people to travel. NECO clears examiners allowances after protest threats
The National Examinations Council, NECO, says it has paid the allowances of all 72,138 examiners engaged as ad-hoc staff in the 2024 School-based Senior School Certificate Examination. Its Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, in a statement yesterday, explained that the Council commenced payment of the examiners allowances on October 4 on bank basis, and had finished yesterday. Sani therefore urged members of the public to disregard stories making round on the social media that the Council had deliberately refused to pay the examiners.
