Meanwhile, some Nigerians still took to the streets to protest against bad governance. In Abuja, the Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, denied attacking the October 1 protesters in Utako, explaining that the operatives only took proactive measures to prevent looting.  In Delta State, residents however shunned the protest, as people went about their normal activities freely.  In Rivers state, alleged thugs took over the Port Harcourt Pleasure Park, which was the convergence point used during the August #EndBadGovernance protest.   And in Lagos, the peaceful protest closely monitored by security personnel, was joined by a former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Ikeja Underbridge and Freedom Park in Ojota.  The protest tagged “Fearless In October”, comes about two months after the August #EndBadGovernance protests.

The Federal Government has distributed 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tricycles to youths as part of commitment by President Bola Tinubu to alleviate the daily struggles of young persons.  The Minister of Youth Development, Dr Jamila Ibrahim, who announced this yesterday during the first phase distribution of the tricycles, said they would go a long way in easing the transportation challenges faced by citizens across the country.  According to her, the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund will also provide the financial backbone for many  young innovators to thrive, boosting not only youth employment but also our economy at large.  The Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said that the country has both informal and formal young people, and the creation of Ministry of Youths was the best thing that happened to young people in Nigeria, which will go a long way in creating employment for young people.

Over 8000 Illegal Refineries Destroyed In Six Months

The Deputy Manager of the NNPC Ltd Command and Control Centre, Murtala Muhammad, says over 8,000 illegal refineries and 5,800 illegal oil pipeline connections were detected and destroyed within six months.  Muhammad who disclosed this in Abuja at a Stakeholders Engagement Session with National Assembly journalists, highlighted that oil theft remains a serious concern, especially in Bayelsa, Rivers, Imo, and Abia state.  Our correspondent Nathan Williams reports that the NNPCL Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, said NNPCL has the capacity to increase crude oil production from 1.7 million barrels per day to 3 million, and notes that if oil theft and pipeline vandalization is curbed, it would create an enabling environment for optimal oil production of crude oil per day.

Nigeria Is Not Asking For Debt Forgiveness From China

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it is not discussing debt forgiveness with China, noting that Beijing is willing to lend Nigeria more money and invest more in the economy of Nigeria.  Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who stated this during an interview yesterday monitored from our studios, also revealed that Nigeria would join BRICS+, a nine member economic and political force, at the right time.  Nigeria has been making proposals for debt forgiveness at the United Nations General Assembly for some years now but this hasn’t been achieved.  According to the Debt Management Office (DMO), Nigeria’s external debt stock as of March 2024 was N56trn ($42bn) while domestic debt stood at N65trn ($46.29)

US offers $20m bounty for Iranian accused of plans to kill Trump aide

The US is offering a $20m reward for information leading to the arrest of an Iranian man accused of plotting to assassinate Donald Trump’s former National Security Advisor John Bolton.  Shahram Poursafi, a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), is accused of trying to hire criminals in the US to kill Mr Bolton, a vocal Iran critic, in exchange for $300,000.  The reward announcement comes in the same week that Trump said he had been briefed by US intelligence about an alleged Iranian assassination plot against him.  Iran has previously denied orchestrating any plots to assassinate Trump officials or interfere in US affairs.
