The Court of Appeal in Abuja, has affirmed the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its designation as a terrorist organisation.
The Nigerian government in September 2017, through a Federal High Court in Abuja, proscribed the separatist group, which had been leading agitation for an independent state of Biafra, carved out from the south-east and some parts of south-south Nigeria.
In October 2023, a State High Court in Enugu then nullified the proscription and the designation as a terrorist group. But the Court of Appeal, in a unanimous decision yesterday by a three-member panel headed by Justice Hamma Barka, affirmed the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja
Yesterday’s appeal court ruling means IPOB remains proscribed, although the group and its leader may appeal the ruling at the Supreme Court.
