Akpabio Denies Sexual Harassment Allegations as Natasha formally submits Petition

The Nigerian Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has categorically denied allegations of sexual harassment made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Centre), which is now before a court of competent jurisdiction.

Senator Akpabio at the start today’s plenary session while reacting to the alleged sexual harassment by Senator Natasha stressed that he has always upheld high regards for women and was even recognized as the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria during his tenure, urging the public to await the court’s decision on the matter.

Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, also formally submitted a petition of Sexual Harassment against the Senate President to the Upper chamber, which was referred to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for immediate review.

Although, Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Monguno had called on the senate to reject the petition stating that the matter of sexual harassment was before the court, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan however clarified that the matter before the court was on defamation of her character by an aide of the Senate President who posted comments suggesting she was inappropriately dressed in plenary.

Following her reaction, Leader of the senate, Opeyemi Bamidele relying on Order 40(4) which states that petitions authored by lawmakers and signed by them cannot be accepted by the senate, again aligned with Chief Whip Monguno, calling on Senator Akpabio and the senate to disregard the petition as it was done in error.

Senator Akpabio took note of his submission but insisted that the plenary should continue since there were UK parliamentarian in the gallery.
