Air India Dreamliner Crashes in Ahmedabad, Killing 242 Onboard as Boeing Shares Plunge

A London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India crashed on Thursday in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, with all 242 passengers and crew on board believed to have been killed. So far, rescue teams supported by the military have recovered 204 bodies, with casualties including both those on the plane and residents of the surrounding area. The aircraft reportedly smashed into a building housing doctors and their families in a crowded residential part of the city, which is home to about eight million people.

Air India confirmed that the passengers included 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and a Canadian. The flight also carried two pilots and 10 cabin crew. Several unverified videos posted on social media showed the plane rapidly losing altitude — with its nose up — before it struck the building and exploded into a fireball.

Following the crash, Boeing shares tumbled by 5.0 per cent in early trading on Thursday. The aviation giant stated that it was in contact with Air India and stood ready to support them. Boeing has been attempting to rebound from a series of recent setbacks, including a labour strike last year in the United States and two fatal crashes involving the 737 MAX in 2018 and 2019
