The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has raised the alarm over the growing threat of human trafficking to Nigeria’s national security, warning that the crime has evolved into a global criminal enterprise valued at $245 billion annually.
Speaking at the 28th National Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum and Summit on Human Trafficking today in Abuja, the AGF described human trafficking as a transnational crime that endangers individuals, destabilises communities, and undermines national development.
Also speaking at the forum, the Director-General of NAPTIP, Hajiya Binta Adamu Bello, said the agency has recorded major gains in the fight, including the launch of a National Human Trafficking Data Dashboard and the domestication of the ECOWAS TIP+ Strategy in Nigeria.
She also noted disturbing new trends such as loan-for-sex trafficking, fake job offers, and scholarship scams, which she said are targeting unsuspecting youths.
Bello highlighted the need for greater synergy and accountability among stakeholders and called on them to ensure that their interventions are documented and reflected in the national dashboard.
